What is Nutritional Therapy?
By using evidence-based integrated healthcare approaches, we are able to look at the whole, unique body and the environment around us to understand the root cause of health issues.Conventional medicine is the cornerstone of healthcare today, however, oftentimes only provides short-term symptom relief. Functional Medicine and Nutrition allows the client and therapist to take a holistic look at their health situation to discover what may be the root cause(s). We then work together to find sustainable and practical ways to improve health using one or more of a combination of solutions, starting with nutrition, lifestyle changes, supplements and functional testing.
Why Nutrition?
Food and it’s nutrients have a fundamental role to play in maintaining our state of health and wellbeing. Simply put, food can either positively promote our health or seriously damage it.
We are all unique, so what might be good for someone, may be detrimental to another. By using the science of nutrition together with a patient-centred approach, nutrition and functional medicine uses a range of tools to investigate imbalances in the body.
I work with clients to formulate a personalised nutrition and lifestyle plan to support a goal, condition or dysregulation that also works alongside conventional medicine and individuality.
What is ‘functional’ health?
Using the functional or lifestyle medicine approach, we focus on understanding the way all of the systems in our bodies interconnect and how we can harness the natural world around us to heal – using food, our environment, sleep, movement and even our breath.
The idea is that I give you the tools to take away so that you are knowledgeable and empowered to implement new ways to improve your health.
Why should we care about our health?
In much earlier times than we live today, our health was determined simply by being alive and not being eaten by an animal or dying from a simple accident or toothache!
But since the dawn of modern medicine and emergency care, life expectancy has dramatically improved. The 20th century witnessed the implementation of nutrient guidelines (nutrient reference values) across the globe to combat nutrient deficient diseases.
So why is being ‘healthy’ so challenging?
Nowadays, we are witnessing an unprecedented growth of ‘chronic diseases’ associated with living in the modern industrialised world, our disconnection to nature (and the addition of ultra-processed foods). In addition to rising rates of heart disease, cancer, dementia, autoimmunity and metabolic syndrome, even nutrient deficient diseases are now also returning to developed countries, so looking after our health and become even more fundamental.
There are several internal and external influences that impact our state of health:
